JACKSONVILLE, N.C. — Officials released more details about the death of a 24-year-old Camp Lejeune, N.C.-based sailor.

Hospital Corpsman 3rd Class Samuel S. Cann, of Marrero, La., with 2nd Marine Logistics Group, collapsed around 8:30 a.m. Friday while running a practice physical readiness test and was pronounced dead at Naval Hospital Camp Lejeune about 45 minutes later, according to 2nd Lt. Rich Ulsh, a 2nd MLG spokesman. The Naval Criminal Investigative Service is investigating Cann’s death.

“This is a tragic loss to all who knew Petty Officer Cann,” Ulsh said. “Second Medical Battalion and the 2nd MLG, we are here to help Sam’s family in every way that we can.”

Cann joined the Navy on Sept. 24, 2001, and attended recruit training in Great Lakes, Ill. He trained as a corpsman; served at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Md.; and then joined 2nd Medical Battalion on Oct. 7, 2005.
