Phased-out unmanned aircraft makes final flight at Whiting Field

Pioneer, an unmanned aircraft that has made thousands of flights in Iraq, made its final voyage Thursday at Whiting Naval Air Station's Choctaw outlying field in Santa Rosa County.

Pioneer is being phased out and will be replaced by the Shadow, a new generation of unmanned aerial systems. Training Air Wing 6 UAV DET, responsible for training Marines and sailors on unmanned aerial vehicle operations, is moving from Choctaw to Fort Huachuca in Arizona for integrated training with the Army.

The Navy and Marine Corps have been using Pioneer since 1985. During its tenure, it has supported every major U.S. military operation.

The UAV provides commanders with a bird's-eye view of the battlefield in real time. It also is capable of conducting reconnaissance and finding targets at speeds in excess of 100 mph.
