A Marine recruiter assigned to the permanent contact station in Grants Pass, Ore., arrived at work just before 8 p.m. Oct. 21 to find the other Marine assigned there dead of an apparent suicide, according to Marine and local law enforcement officials.

The Grants Pass police department would not discuss what caused the death of Sgt. Ronald Nuttall, because the case is still technically open, though it is not being actively investigated.

Grants Pass detective Dave Daniels said he is not interviewing witnesses, family members or co-workers because he “did not see any type of foul play in this.”

Daniels said it’s “fair to say” Nuttall’s death was a suicide, though the Oregon state medical examiner will make the final determination.

“It’s always a case until the medical examiner deems it not to be,” he said. “I don’t expect this to be any type of drawn-out event. I assume he’ll close the case in a short time frame.”

In a press release, Gunnery Sgt. Jonathan Cress, spokesman for the 12th Marine Corps Recruiting District, described Nuttall as “a fine Marine and a true patriot.”

District spokeswoman Victoria Kelsall said the district’s chaplain was dispatched to Oregon as a grief counselor for Nuttall’s family and fellow Marines shortly after his death.
