Police receive evidence from U.S. marines in gang-rape case

The Yomiuri Shimbun

The Hiroshima prefectural police have received several pieces of evidence from the U.S. Marine Corps' Iwakuni Air Station in connection with an alleged gang rape involving four marines stationed there, it was learned Tuesday.

The four marines from the air station in Iwakuni, Yamaguchi Prefecture, are suspected of sexually assaulting a 19-year-old woman from Hiroshima on Sunday.

The police had negotiated with the U.S. forces authorities to obtain the evidence related to the case, including a car allegedly used in the assault.

They are now examining items left in the car to determine the circumstances of the crime.

The police will soon seek arrest warrants for the four suspects and ask the U.S. forces to hand them over based on the Japan-U.S. Status of Forces Agreement once the arrest warrants are issued.
