Uniform regulations now prohibit male officers from having a gap in the white collar strip that wraps around the inside neck of their dress blue uniform.

Commandant Gen. James Conway made a pen change to the uniform regulations Oct. 15 intended to stop male officers from having a gap in the white collar strip that wraps around the inside neck of their dress blue uniform.

“It’s a minor change to the regulations, which now specifically says there will be no gap and there should be an overlap,” said uniform board spokeswoman Mary Boyt.

Under the new regulations published on the Marine Corps Uniform Board’s Web site, the edges of the white collar strip, which join in the front at a Marine’s Adam’s apple, must overlap and protrude above the dress blue collar no more than 1/4-inch.

Boyt said a gap where the white collar strip’s ends meet has never been authorized, though the previous regulations made a “slight” overlap optional, not mandatory.
