Survey to seek opinions on SNCO dress uniform

Marine Corps Systems Command will launch an online survey Oct. 29 to solicit input from the total force about a new staff noncommissioned officer evening dress uniform. The uniform has been advocated by all three sergeants major of the Marine Corps to hold that office since the switch was proposed in summer 2003, a SysCom spokeswoman said.

The survey will ask for Marines’ opinions and feedback, not just an up-or-down vote, said SysCom spokeswoman 1st Lt. Geraldine Carey.

Retired Sgt. Maj. Alford McMichael, who held the Corps’ top enlisted spot when the first Web survey was published in May 2003, participated in the initial wear test during the 2004 Marine Corps ball season, five months after turning over his post to Sgt. Maj. John Estrada, who unsuccessfully pushed throughout his tenure to adopt the new evening dress.

“It’s never been shot down. It’s just never made it up to the commandant’s desk,” said Marine Corps Uniform Board spokeswoman Mary Boyt. “The first time, it made it all the way to the [assistant commandant of the Marine Corps], but was originally submitted with no phase-out date for the current evening dress uniform. That was a point of contention, and we never got beyond that.”

During the annual sergeants major symposium in Arlington, Va., last August, the Corps’ current top enlisted Marine, Sgt. Maj. Carlton Kent, told Marine Corps Times he would push for the adoption of the new evening dress with a six-year phase-out for the current one so that senior enlisted Marines who favor keeping the traditional uniform wouldn’t be forced to buy the new one.
