SOUTHAVEN, Miss. — Active-duty military living in Southaven will get a break on their city taxes paid when they buy a motor vehicle tag.
Aldermen this week approved an exemption up to $50 for active-duty military members.
Mississippi motorists pay county, city and school taxes when they buy motor vehicle tags.
Local governments assess property taxes on the value of a motor vehicle as determined by information supplied to them each year by the Mississippi State Tax Commission. The cost of a tag decreases each year as the value of the vehicle drops.
The 2007 Legislature passed a law allowing county supervisors and municipal boards to exempt from motor vehicle property taxes one motor vehicle owned by a Mississippi resident serving with the National Guard, reserves or any U.S. armed forces serving on active duty in Iraq or Afghanistan.
Supervisors could exempt up to $100 in county taxes, except for school taxes. Cities could exempt up to $50 in taxes, except for school taxes.
The exemption took effect Oct. 1 and will repeal on Sept. 30, 2009.
Earlier this month, Jackson County supervisors approved an exemption of $100 on taxes collected when a tag is bought.
Southaven Mayor Greg Davis said his city’s exemption will cover one car per family and will grant an exemption up to $50.
DeSoto County supervisors voted Monday to seek an attorney general’s opinion to clarify the law. Supervisors said they were unclear about the law.
