Well to get right to it:
My first question is kind of a vain one, but because my recruiter answered most of my others ones and the rest were handled by an enlisted friend i have, there’s few left.
Question: I wear contacts, and i know that means that while at boot i'll be wearing PC's. I get that and whatever; i dont mind a bit of eye accessories. My question is, is there ANY other times when i'll have to wear those lady killers? and for anyone whose had to wear them, does it affect you negativly in performance? i plan on being in reserves till i'm done with college then go full time. and obviously try out for recon and sniper. i'm a pretty good shot as of now, but does the selection process take into account that i can't see without contacts/glasses?
well since that took so long to type i forgot my other questions. :bunny:
any thoughts?

You wear those glasses all through training. After training you have the option of wearing your own prescription glasses or issued. Marines that wear glasses can answer more but I believe that for gas masks they will make you prescription inserts. After boot camp don't throw away those spectacles that were issued. Some commands may require you to wear them?Or you at least have a backup. Do a search in the poolee forum this topic has been broached before.
I didn't wear my BCs a single time after rifle qual. They also say to bring them with you to MCT, I did...but still didn't wear them.
If you can get along without them, don't wear them. If you need them to do regular ole' daily stuff, wear them.

my recruiter told me that after boot you never have to wear them again. but what about when i go full time. or active duty?

I didn't get my first pair of new eyes until bootcamp - after bootcamp though I was allowed to buy whatever kind of glasses - they just can't be all Elton John-ish, no sparkles, nothing dangling off of them, you know. Nothing eccentric. Keep the ones from bootcamp (just in case you DO need a backup one day) because you may need them for a JOB (Junk On the Bunk) inspection where you have to display EVERYTHING that was issued to you in bootcamp.

Depending on the Drill Instructor, your going to have to wear it all the time or just for the range. The only time I find them hindering my performance is when I have to wear the kevelar. They dont exactly match up and the bridge will end up digging into your nose. You have to constantly adjust it, which will undoubtly draw the attention of the Drill Instructors. When you graduate from MCRD, dont throw them away. MCT will require it as well as depending on your MOS. For me I have to wear them because I'm Motor T. for obvious reasons. Just hold on to them and if noone ask you to switch over to them, wear CONSERVATIVE civilian portholes.

i believe you have to havde 20/20 to be a sniper. you can also get the high speed laysik eye surgery through the corps but there usually is a wait of 6 months to a year for that once you hit fleet

so you can't wear contacts? (if you can, at what times are you allowed to)

Heh! 'Lady Killers'? ...not in my experience.
I never wore contacts in my life, and would not consider doing so, especially when performing high-risk tasks that are unsanitary and involve things like flying dust particles, fists, and other Marine-related stuff.
I've been wearing safety-type glasses since boot camp, 40 years ago. Good idea. You are only issued two eyes, and it's smart to take good care of them.
If you are going to be in an office-type situation, I guess contacts are ok, but Marines tend to wind up in the field, and on short notice.

hmm. well out in the field.. would something like http://www.envirosafetyproducts.com/icons.php?id=733.jpg <-- This be more preffered than BCs? and would those be allowed in the field even?

My experience is the birth control clark kent glasses have been replaced with better frames. If you need them you are issued them and if you are issued them you are required to wear them in formal inspections such as an alpha inspection or like Kim said a JOB.

You can wear whatever you want after boot camp most of the time. When you go to the gas chamber contacts are a no-go.
I wouldn't recommend ever wearing contacts in the field, but some people do it. Anyway, you're just going to be around a bunch of Marines anyway- nobody to impress.
Anyway, about recon
The Corps outlined the eligibility requirements for Marines who want to go recon in Marine Corps Administrative Message (MARADMIN) 417/07.
To make the switch to recon, Marines must be male U.S. citizens who have:
o A General Technical score of 105 or higher.
o A score of 200 or higher on the Physical Fitness Test.
o A Combat Water Survival-3 swim qualification or higher.
o Normal color vision.
Marines with corrected vision must have 20/20 vision in one eye and at least 20/100 vision in the other

hey thanks that was really helpful!
but what does "Marines with corrected vision must have 20/20 vision in one eye and at least 20/100 vision in the other"
does that mean like lasik corrected? or corrected with the use of glasses

I don't know to tell you the truth. I would assume that it means you can wear glasses if you have 20/20 20/100 without them. I'm trying to figure it out myself. Honestly though, if you're wanting to do the recon thing, you need to get your eyes fixed. Less than ideal vision could be a real problem in that world.
