Marine Recruiters 'Traitors,' Say Code Pink Protesters
Monisha Bansal

(CNSNews.com) - The U.S. Marine Corps recruiting station in Berkeley, Calif., has become a battleground for protesters. A "pro-troop" organization rally on Wednesday was aimed at countering anti-war protesters who have been demonstrating for the last three weeks.

Code Pink, a leftist anti-war group, began protesting the nine-month-old recruitment center on Sept. 26. The group posted signs saying "recruiters are traitors" and "recruiters lie, children die."

The group also sent a message to their supporters saying: "The Marines have landed in Berkeley! We are shocked and infuriated they have opened a despicable Officer Recruiting Station just blocks from Berkeley High School, UCB and Berkeley City college. We are determined to SHUT DOWN this recruiting station and we need your help! Tell the Marines NO Military Predators in our town!!! Protect our vulnerable youth!"

Capt. Richard Lund, who runs the recruitment stations, responded to Code Pink with an open letter published in the Berkeley Daily Planet, in which he stated: "While the protest that you staged in front of my office on Wednesday, Sept. 26, was an exercise of your constitutional rights, the messages that you left behind were insulting, untrue and ultimately misdirected."

The women of Code Pink have since been a frequent presence at the center, planning protests for at least once a week.

"A lot of the work that we've been doing to bring awareness to what's happening with the war in Iraq is to do what we call 'truth in recruiting,'" said Dana Balicki, national organizer for Code Pink. She added that this is to shed light on the fact that it is recruiters' "jobs to sell the military to young people."

"They have certain point quotas that they have to make, and unfortunately, it is the young men and women of this country that are needed to fill those quotas for recruitment," Balicki told Cybercast News Service. "Recruiting centers, while they are not the masterminds of the war in Iraq, they definitely share some responsibility for continuing to garner support for the military."

But Danny Gonzalez, communications director for Move America Forward, a conservative, pro-military organization, said, "We want to tell the community and basically tell Code Pink that their tactics are uncalled for in this situation."

"They are literally attacking the military and attacking the recruiters," he said. "That is completely off the mark."

Move America Forward said they expect between 100 and 200 "pro-troop" protesters at the center on Wednesday.

Balicki noted that the residents of Berkeley are opposed to the recruitment center.

"There have been various resolutions adopted by the city council over the years that have basically condemned the war in Iraq, saying that Berkeley is not going to be a place that supports the war in Iraq or supports any military aggression, or sending any more of our young men and women to fight this illegal and immoral war," she said.

"The women of Berkeley felt that having a military recruitment center open in the area is something that really the community at large didn't support," she added.

"Even if the community around Berkeley doesn't want him to be here, they really don't have a say in it - it's his legal right and the right of the U.S. military to establish a recruiting station here," Gonzalez told Cybercast News Service.

"The military leased this office from the land owner through legal means, and therefore [Lund] has a right to be here and do whatever recruiting activities he wants," he said.

Gonzalez also took issue with Code Pink, for calling Lund a traitor. "If they want to stop the war, what they ought to be doing is protesting Congress and the people who actually have the power to change things, rather than the military recruiters who are simply doing their jobs," said Gonzalez.

"Many of us feel that calling a recruiter a traitor was not necessarily appropriate," responded Balicki, who noted that the Bay Area Code Pink group is autonomous. "We feel like that is pointing a finger at someone who is part of the system, instead of at the people who are the architects of the system - meaning the Bush administration."

"But I understand that people are frustrated right now and people are upset," she said. "I think some of those emotions were unleashed at the Berkeley recruitment center."

"The saddest story is that the sons and daughters of this country are being turned into killers and the recruiter plays a part in that, the Bush administration plays a part in that, our members of Congress who continue to support the war and continue to fund it play a part in that," she concluded.

Supporters, protesters wage a war of words over Berkeley recruiting station

Henry K. Lee, Chronicle Staff Writer

Thursday, October 18, 2007

(10-17) 14:38 PDT Berkeley -- Dozens of flag-waving military supporters squared off boisterously with peace activists Wednesday in the first major showdown over a U.S. Marine Corps recruiting station that until recently had been operating below the radar in downtown Berkeley.

Demonstrators led by conservative radio talk-show host Melanie Morgan shouted down members of Code Pink, a group created by Bay Area women, and other peace and social justice groups. The two sides stood on Shattuck Avenue near Addison Street just outside the recruiting station, which was closed Wednesday.

Shortly before noon, there was some pushing and shoving between at least two people, which prompted Berkeley police Sgt. Randy Files to bellow at the anti-war protesters to "move back," forcing them to gather across the street.

"I determined for everyone's safety to separate the two groups," Files said.

Several police officers stood watch, including Berkeley Police Chief Doug Hambleton at one point. There were no arrests, but one protester affiliated with the group The World Can't Wait was cited for burning an American flag, in violation of a city law banning possession of flaming substances in public. The World Can't Wait is opposed to President Bush's policies and wants him out of office.

Members of the two camps shouted at each other and at times yelled the same slogans, including "Support the troops."

"USA," one group chanted. "Out of Iraq," responded the others, who said they were angry that the recruiting station, which relocated from Alameda, is in proximity to Berkeley High School, UC Berkeley and Berkeley City College.

Some demonstrators squared off individually.

"None of us is pro-war! I'm pro-defense," Kevin Graves, 50, of Discovery Bay shouted at one protester. Graves, whose son Army Spc. Joseph Graves was killed in Baghdad in July 2006, continued, "My son died so you and I can stand here and disagree."

In an interview, Graves said, "I think they're misguided," referring to Code Pink.

But David Santos, 15, of Oakland, said the conservative element was on the wrong side of the issue.

"They represent the social base that's giving rise to this imperialistic war. Their so-called patriotic attitude," he said, "just shows their blatant disregard for humanity and what the flag stands for. The very fact that they're holding it up is enough for us to be out here."

Graves yelled at another protester, Pablo Paredes, 26, of Oakland and mocked him for his long hair. "Are you a soldier? They wouldn't let you looking like that," he said.

Paredes said later that he had served five years in the Navy and that people of color like himself bore the brunt of military service.

"I think the color of my skin shouldn't make me be on the front line," Paredes said, adding that he left the Navy because he refused orders and opposed the war in Iraq.

Addressing the crowd, Morgan, a KSFO morning show personality, said, "How much do we have to put up with this, people? They don't understand that we have a volunteer Army. Why don't you guys go bother Nancy Pelosi and Hillary Clinton?"

Georgann Seavey, 63, of San Ramon said she was a flight attendant who shuttled troops back and forth from Vietnam.

"I just don't want to go down that road again, where they're disrespected," she said. "We need to support the troops." Asked for her thoughts on Code Pink, Seavey demurred, saying, "I don't want to give them any publicity."

Roberta Allen, 63, wore contact lenses featuring the U.S. flag.

"Number one, I love my country. Number two, I love our troops. I'm here to defend our defenders."

But a pink-clad Carly Hue, 26, of Berkeley said, "I think you can't make sense out of people who don't make sense. You can't talk to people who won't listen."

Medea Benjamin, a co-founder of Code Pink, said members plan to return to the recruiting station each week to protest. "We feel that it's our obligation because of this war to shut down the recruiting station," she said.

It disgusts me how people think they are saving children by doing stuff like this and to use a fallen soldiers death to further their own agenda.. sickens me.. They have no respect for their families i get so angry looking at it even walking down in san diego in 02 it would anger me i felt like spitting on them.

I only wish we were a nation where military service was required to instill morals into this degrading population of the "what's in it for me'ers"

I have not experienced a demonstration like Code Pink before, but I ride a lot of PGR Missions and have seen what the UG's do at a funeral. Makes one want to "adjust" their attitudes, but fortunately, the PGR handles it about as well as can be expected. We just turn our backs, don't acknowledge them and do our best to shield the family from these low lifes!! The good news is - - - LEOs are on our side!!

Has anyone thought to ask code pink why they would want the troops to come home if they want them banned from Berkley, or san fransisco all together. Liberalism will cancel itself out everytime. Look at globle warming. Marijuana vs cigarettes...

Showdown at Berkeley
by Catherine Moy (more by this author)
Posted 10/19/2007 ET

A showdown between anti-war activists who last month defaced a Marine recruiting office and flag-carrying patriots took over a street in Berkeley on Wednesday with noise levels that reached a half-mile away at the University of California in town.

Berkeley police officers kept the Code Pink contingent of about 150 separated from the group of about 500 led by Move America Forward, the nation’s largest pro-troop organization. The incidents of abhorrent behavior were rare, but included an anti-war demonstrator trying to knife a pro-troop supporter and two code Pink followers burning flags.

A group of Code Pink protesters surrounded a woman and pushed her around after she said that her brother and other family members were protecting the United States in Iraq. The young woman shook with fear and wept.

“It makes me sick,” said Megan, whose last name is withheld to protect her from harassment. “Code Pink is out here every week protesting in front of the Marine center. These people (Marines) are just trying to do their jobs.”

There were no arrests, and numerous police officers stood watch, including Berkeley Police Chief Doug Hambleton at one point. "As long as people stay peaceful, we're as happy as we can be," Hambleton told the San Francisco Chronicle. Melanie Morgan, chairman of Move America Forward, led the counter-protest to let Code Pink and other anti-war groups know that Americans do not approve of their antics that hurt the troops and their mission.

“I was thrilled to have so many patriotic people from all across the San Francisco Bay Area and California turn out to embarrass the people who have slandered our troops,” Morgan said. “Over 500 individuals -- mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, daughters and their friends and supporters proved that, just because you can lie about our heroic men and women, doesn’t make the lie palatable or even close to the truth.

“We will make sure that the truth is always known when it comes to people who will lay their lives down for even those who slander them,” said Morgan.

The large crowd supporting the troops and their mission included veterans, Blue Star parents, or those whose children are serving in the military; Gold Star parents, or those who have lost a child in war; civilians and members of Move America Forward, Gathering of Eagles and other pro-troops groups.

Medea Benjamin, the socialist founder of Code Pink, led her group in Berkeley, dancing in pink striped pants and singing. The Code Pink crowd used bullhorns, upside-down American flags, chanting and yelling to show their displeasure with the war in Iraq and the Bush Administration. Their signs had sayings such as “Make levees not war,” and “F… Bush.”

“I feel very strongly that what we are doing in Iraq is very misguided,” said Pat Maginnis, a member of the National Organization of Women and an anti-war protester.

The clash of protesters resulted from Code Pink vandalizing the Berkeley Marine recruitment center on Sept. 26. The group hung signs on the center calling the Marines “assassins” and scrawled words calling the Marines “liars” and “traitors.”

Marine Capt. Richard Lund, who served two tours of duty in Iraq, wrote an open letter to Code Pink that appeared in the Berkely campus newspaper, “Daily Planet.” The Marine center was closed on Wednesday during the protests, but his letter was pasted on a window for everybody to read.

“While the protest that you staged in front of my office on Wednesday, Sept. 26, was an exercise of your constitutional rights, the messages that you left behind were insulting, untrue, and ultimately misdirected,” Lund wrote. “. . . scrawled across the doorway to my office, you wrote, “Recruiters are Traitors.” Please explain this one. How exactly am I a traitor? Was I a traitor when I joined the Marine Corps all those years ago? Is every Marine, therefore, a traitor? Was I a traitor during my two stints in Iraq? Was I a traitor when I was delivering humanitarian aid to the victims of the tsunami in Sumatra? Or do you only consider me a traitor while I am on this job?”

Capt. Lund recruits college students and college graduates for Marine officer school. His entire letter is at the Berkeley Daily Planet.

Rae Abileah, local groups coordinator for Code Pink, has protested in front of several recruiting centers and likes to educate potential recruits before the sign up.

“I think it’s important to (stand at) recruit centers to teach people about their rights,” Abileah said, adding that unscrupulous recruiters have promised cash bonuses and expedited citizenship just to lure recruits.

She also complained that some of the folks on the other side of the debate have been violent in earlier confrontations, destroying Code Pink’s signs.

Several Code Pink protesters refused to give their names or talk about their reason for defacing the Marine office. But Code Pink’s calendar shows a concerted campaign to drive the recruitment office out of Berkeley, the birthplace of the free speech movement. One Code Pink protester held a sign that said, “No military predators in our town.”
“A lot of good men have spilled their blood so Code Pink can do this,” veteran Jim Kelly said.

Bryan Welden of Walnut Creek, a member of the Lafayette Flag Brigade, had another take on why the crowd of troop supporters outnumbered the anti-war protesters.
“We need to show our Armed Forces that we stand directly behind them. We need to show the media that all of us are not Code Pinkos. And we need to show the Bay Area that we all need to support our troops.”

Ah Yes, good old Berkeley, the #1 protesting arena during the Nam Conflict. People throwing themselves on the railroad tracks to stop trains and doing other stupid **** as a demonstration against the war. Maybe its because its a college town, but as far as I am concerned it can sink in one of the future California Quakes.

Where the f*** did this little 15-year old piece of s*** learn his America-hating Communist rhetoric? At the Stalin-Guevara Day Care Center? He shows contempt for patriotism (which means "contempt for humanity"??!!! Where did he get THAT from??!!) and hatred of the flag and what it stands for (is something to OPPOSE???!!!!)

Did someone forget to tell the ungrateful little c***sucker that it's because of the flag that represents the blood spilled by unselfish patriots that he has the freedom to spit on the very symbol of such a right? How come no one's given him an attitude recalibration yet? Damn, I was picked on in school, but y'know, sometimes, some folks just need a good old-fashioned stompin' to re-adjust that uppity-ness.

And the fact that our flag flies proudly is the reason to protest it and the recruiting station? TO F***ING PROTEST AGAINST THE FLAG???!!! Is that how much the little f***er hates this country and how much he wants to bring it usunder? Does he even know WHY he hates? Dammit, I filled out my college loan papers at the library in Berkeley just around the corner from that recruiting office the year that little b**** was BORN!!!

Speaking of race: the long-haired Navy b**** who said he got out of the Navy because they make all the 'people of color' fight on the front lines???!!! The sea-going c***sucker served on a SHIP!!!! What front lines???!!! Did someone tell him that white people were suddenly barred from joining the military and that it was a 'non-whites only' force? And he embraces his victim status as a 'person of color' <spit>. I hate that f***ing term. 'People of color' implies that white folks don't have 'color', or that they don't HAVE to define themselves by color because they are the 'majority', and that everyone else who is not white must carry the burden of defining themselves by 'color'. And this stupid sucker bought into that crap. As far as I'm concerned, whites have just as much 'color' as 'people of 'color'. Why was he even in the Navy, then? And why protest NOW?

Omigod, if one of those f***ing protesters tried to stick me or got in my face or even brushed up on me, I swear I'd be momentarily forgetting Jesus and hurt a MF bad. I'll go to jail willingly for that. Yes, the ones who protest for peace and rally against the military will use the same violent methods they accuse the military of committing. Great - not too hypocritical.

Let all the few good men and women that want to leave join the the mass migration of our Marine Corps Bases, that is the many that have not been brain washed, LEAVE!!!!!! They would't have a flag for all of them would be burned, it would be funny to look at what they come up with anyway.

Next thing on the agenda, the United States can invade this "Cluster Fluk" of a nation and establish good law and order! Uaaah-Raah. Political statement? Yep!

Having been stationed in the territory of california once in my tour in the Marine Corps. I've always said since, make california a "Country", let them make their on flag. Let all the few good men and women that want to leave join the the mass migration of our Marine Corps Bases, that is the many that have not been brain washed, LEAVE!!!!!! They would't have a flag for all of them would be burned, it would be funny to look at what they come up with anyway.

Already happened long ago:

That's quite a bit of rhetoric for a 15 year old. Reminds me of many teenagers I've worked with who think they know everything. If these people want to do something, why aren't they protesting congress.

It also seems like the protesters have no answer as to how the recruiters are traitors. Simple solution, if you don't like the Marines, don't join. I hear a lot of protesters who assert their right to protest, and want to make sure they have every single legal right afforded them. Well, what about the recruiters? Do they have rights? Like to be left alone? Also, isn't scrawling something across someone's doorway a form of vandalism?

I almost wonder if a group of Marines, went to their houses and scrawled something across their doorway, if they wouldn't be crying foul. They don't agree with the war, fine, that's their choice. But, I think it's delusional to think calling recruiters traitors is going to get the war over any faster.

I don't recall anyone holding a gun to my head when I signed on the dotted line. I feel bad for the protester who lost his son, especially after having lost two infants sons. However, if they want to do something, go to Washington, D.C.

SEMPER FI,

Old Sarge what is scarier Pelosi as Speaker or having her replaced by Cindy Sheehan? There are rumors that she will challenge the Speaker for Her Seat in the next Elections.:!::usmc:

She actually is running against Pelosi. However, realistically, I don't see her getting elected.
