I signed up for 4 years as an 03xx. I had a couple of questions - they might seem rather minor and irrelevant, so if you don't think they're worthy of this forum, let me know.
What kind of area do you live in in most places? I believe it is a dorm-like situation with three Marines per unit? I'm assuming i'll be stationed at Pendleton or 29 Palms - but possibly not.
Where is your weapon(s) kept? Do you keep them in the room, or in the armory? Also, where is your gear kept?
What is the policy on personal vehicles? Also, what is the policy on personal effects?
My ship date is 20071105

Now hear this:
Most Grunts live in rooms if they are avalable. Some live in open squad bays with partitions.
Weapons are in the Armory. You keep your gear is keep with you.
Each command has there policies on personal vehicles. Personal effects vary and depend what you are talking about

Grunts are scattered all over Pendleton. Some areas are nicer than others. But, chances are good you'll be living in a room with one other Marine.
You aren't allowed to keep weapons in your room, whether they are owned by the Marine Corps or yourself.
I don't know of any unit that is restricting Marines from owning cars once they are out of student status. But, they could start tomorrow.

If you go to boot in san diego chances are great youll be at pendleton or 29 stumps. There is a small chance youll be at hawaii. Grunts on pendleton are at san mateo which is 5th marines or horno which is 1st marines. 7th marines are at 29 palms and it doesnt matter what part of base you live cuz youll hate it no matter where your at. Gear is kept in your wall locker, you live in barracks room with one or two roomates depending on the barracks you get. They do not prohibit personal vehicles unless you get a dui on base or lose your base driving privelige.

hopefully since you are from the SD area id request overseas or east coast least you will get away from the normal stuff you are used to and get to experience things that you havent already been introduced to. aka dont eat the banana

I disagree i was stationed right by where i grew up. I still lived at the barracks and had the full experience of a grunt Marine but went home on the weekends and saw all my friends and family. You get to spend more time with them before you deploy which is important. Plus its a good feeling knowing you can see friends and family whenever you want and it cuts back on missing home and being homesick. especially as a grunt your always deployed or in the field so its nice to go home and relaz with friends and family and sleep in your own bed after a month at cax

When i asked him where else he keeps his car and board he says: Duuuude the parentals totally live in Seal Beach, its awesome!

You can have personal weapons on base. You check them into the amory and you are issued a rifle card for them. You will be required to check them out and clean them on your free time. Brown baggers drive cars ... fact of life. Infantry spends most of their time in the field so if that is where you are headed plan on it.

An open squad bay with only one other person? That had to be the biggest hook up in the history of the world.

Uhh, turns out backfromiraq isn't really a Marine, and I think he was banned.

Well if he isn't then he used somebodies name that IS a Marine. Because Carey Berry shows up in MOL. However from what I've been reading it doesn't appear that this "backfromiraq" character is a Marine at all.

It was figured out last night after he told us he was stationed at 39 Palms and Fort Lejeune, California. Haha, he also didn't know what his MOS # was.

Yes sir, I believe they were sure. Some higher-ranking members of the board banned him, I believe. He also admitted it in the end. I have a feeling my thread is going to be shut down if we keep talking about this.

I served as a radioman (2533) and most all my service was with grunts. I spent years... literally... sleeping under the stars, and packing my gear, weapons, and PRC-25 radio, batteries, food, water, spare mortar rounds, everything... on my back, and my 'personal vehicle' was a pair of boots.
In Vietnam, I had one stretch in the bush that was almost a full year (Bravo 1/3 point FO team), without seeing any area more 'rear' than Con Tien, and Khe Gio bridge.
Even after I returned stateside, and had decent barracks, like when I was briefly an OSC instructor at Quantico, I still spent more time in the field than I did under a roof, because I was again, working in a grunt environment.
I liked serving with the grunts, and when I was assigned away from the grunts, I complained, and requested transfer back to the grunts.
Don't worry, after a couple years in the field, you'll be looking and feeling nice and salty. ;)

In other words Randall - if you want to end up like Leonard & Sparkie...........................HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA HAHA! If you ain't shooting at something, you're packing, unpacking, humping (and I don't mean a splittail), PTing, and drinking yourself into oblivion long enough to eat strange things (like Covey ;) ) . If you have a lot of down time - you find allllllllllllllllll kinds of things to talk about. When you're a Marine, come back and go into the Hooch, you'll see.

Haha, hell yeah! Some motivating stuff.
29 Palms some rooms are freaking small. I had 3 and 4 Marines to a room. Yep it sucked. All these Marines running to the head at the same time.
Squad bays once at 29 Palms, I'd just came back from Camp Fuji and Oki so it did not make a differene to me.
Proud to be a Grunt! Have fun.
The best job you will ever love.
S/F,
CEYA!
