Choppers have area folks buzzing

Wednesday, October 17, 2007

LEWISTON - The Twin Cities are not under attack, and Stephen Spielberg is not here filming a movie. The Marines have been by in recent days, but police said they are just passing through.

In dramatic fashion, as it turns out.

Several helicopter passes over the past week have the community buzzing. The long, fearsome choppers present an unusual sight this far from Brunswick Naval Air Station, but all is well.

"They're just flying back and forth from one place to another," said Lewiston police Lt. James Minkowsky, himself a Navy man. 'Personally, I think they're impressive."

Among the choppers that have flown over is the CH53 Marine troop transport craft. More informally, they are known as Sea Stallions.

Marines at the BNAS are in the area for yearly training exercises, Minkowsky said. Although it is not known precisely what they are up to, it is believed the troops have been going back and forth between the base and another area where they have been training.

Minkowsky said a few people, including some police officers, have called to ask why the choppers have been here.

"But we haven't had any complaints or concerns," the lieutenant said. "People get to see their tax dollars at work."

It was not known how long the helicopters are expected to be passing over the area.
