JACKSONVILLE, N.C. — It’s back to sea for the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit.

After wrapping up about a month’s stay at Camp Buehring, Kuwait, members of the Camp Lejeune, N.C.-based MEU have loaded up and returned to the ships of the Kearsarge Expeditionary Strike Group, according to a MEU press release.

The MEU trained in the Kuwaiti desert, refining its desert combat skills. Many of the exercises were geared toward combat operations, countering improvised explosive devices, medical support training, aerial gunnery and combined arms training, Col. Doug Stilwell, MEU commander, said in a statement.

“My goal for sustainment training was not only to advance our basic combat skills, but also to enhance our abilities across the spectrum of mission sets inherent to Marine air ground task forces,” he stated.

The unit is continuing its scheduled deployment in the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility aboard the Norfolk, Va.-based ships, including the amphibious assault ship Kearsarge, amphibious transport dock Ponce and dock landing ship Gunston Hall.

The MEU is almost halfway through its routine, six-month deployment.
