With added equipment, Marines may be getting too heavy to respond
Last Update: 10/15 2:56 pm

WASHINGTON (AP) - The top man at the Marine Corps says he's concerned about the ability of the Marines to respond to security flare-ups around the world on short notice.

Commandant General James Conway says it's because of the demands from the Iraq war.

He says in recent years, the Marines have become a "second land Army" responsible for securing Iraq. He says they've had to buy heavy equipment, including a fleet of 3,700 mine-resistant vehicles, to protect against roadside bombs.

And he says that's made the Marines "much heavier than ever before."

He spoke at a lunch sponsored by the Center for New American Security.
