Sgt. Jeffrey W. Hunt, 2nd Marine Division Marine of the Year, and Sgt. James D. Steuter.

Commandant Gen. James Conway and a room full of retired leathernecks with the Marine Corps Association honored the group’s Marines of the Year at the Marine Corps Ground Awards Dinner on Oct. 11 in Washington, D.C.

Sgt. Troy White with 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines, the 1st Marine Division’s honoree, went from lance corporal to sergeant in less than a year. Currently deployed to Ramadi, Iraq, White is stationed at Twentynine Palms, Calif.

Sgt. Jeffrey Hunt with 2nd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion at Camp Lejeune, N.C., was the 2nd Marine Division’s winner after he was meritoriously promoted twice in Iraq, once as a corporal in July 2005 and then again to sergeant on Feb. 2 — which happened to be the same day his first child was born.

Sgt. James Steuter with 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marines, won for the 3rd Marine Division. Steuter, stationed at Marine Corps Base Hawaii, completed a deployment to Afghanistan last April and recently graduated from the Infantry Squad Leader’s Course at Camp Pendleton.

Reserve Sgt. Baker Brooks with 3rd Battalion, 23rd Marines, was the 4th Marine Division’s winner; he is deployed to Iraq’s Anbar province. He was also named the Selected Marine Corps Reserve’s Marine of the Year in March.

White and Brooks listened to the ceremony via satellite from Iraq.

“They stand out among their peers,” Conway said. “There are tens of thousands of other Marines out there like them doing great work, and I think they symbolize those guys.”
