Remembering Wake Island - December 1, 2007 - Chino, California

This news was published on Thursday, October 11th, 2007

Chino CA – Remembering Wake Island will be the theme of the monthly special event hosted by Planes of Fame Air Museum at Chino Airport on Saturday, December 1, 2007. The event will begin at 10 am with a seminar describing the epic battle to defend tiny Wake Island against the Japanese juggernaut by a vastly outnumbered and under-equipped band of U.S. Marines in the first days of World War II, and conclude with a flight demonstration by the Planes of Fame Japanese Mitsubishi A6M5 Zero fighter plane.

Actually a wishbone-shaped atoll of three islands located in the North Pacific about two-thirds of the distance between Hawaii and Guam, on the day that the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, Wake Island’s defensive garrison consisted of 38 officers and 486 enlisted personnel. The only combat airplanes on the island were 12 Grumman F4F-3 Wildcat fighters of Marine Fighter Squadron 211, eight of which were wrecked on the ground in the first Japanese attack against the bastion. Nevertheless, the embattled Marines held off the Japanese for 16 days, actually defeating the first invasion attempt and sinking the very first Japanese surface warships to be claimed by U.S. Naval forces in World War II. However, with no relief in sight, the Marines were finally overwhelmed by the Japanese on December 23, 1941.

The very first permanent air museum in the American West, Planes of Fame is an independent, non-profit, educational institution staffed primarily by a core of dedicated volunteers. Planes of Fame was also a pioneer in the concept of restoring historic aircraft to flying condition so that they can be appreciated by the public in all their glory. The museum supports its operations with admissions fees, donations and proceeds from the use of its aircraft in various productions.

Planes of Fame also has a special membership program available to the public, with one of the benefits of membership being the opportunity to actually experience the thrill of orientation flights in genuine warbirds. At each monthly special event, members in attendance, including last-minute sign-ups, can have their names entered into a free drawing for a warbird orientation flight.
