MCRD/ERR PARRIS ISLAND, S.C.(Oct. 10, 2007) -- Shooters, prepare to fire.

The fiscal year 2008 Intramural Rifle and Pistol Competition is scheduled to begin Monday and last through Nov. 2 at Weapons and Field Training Battalion.

According to a recent Depot bulletin, the competition is held annually to "promote increased proficiency in the use of individual arms" and to "provide the foundation for Corps-wide marksmanship proficiency and enhanced combat readiness."

"The intramurals are all about continuing the reinforcement of marksmanship," said Chief Warrant Officer-2 Duane Ledford, the match executive officer.

Marines can enter into the competition as four-man teams or as individuals. However, each team needs to have at least one officer and one sergeant.

Marines from all the Depot's units, including Branch Medical Clinic and the Naval Dental Center, are invited to join in. MCAS Marines are also eligible.

Shooters are required to compete with both the M-16A2 and M-9 service weapons during the 26 intramural matches. More than 100 trophies, plaques, medallions and certificates will be presented to the match winners.

However, the awards are not the only things worth competing for.

The upcoming year's Rifle and Pistol Team will be formed from the top intramural shooters.

"Marines need to come with a willingness to learn and a willingness to teach and bring new ideas to the table," said Sgt. Travis Watson, one of the Depot's FY07 Rifle and Pistol Team members, and an instructor for the intramurals. "We're going to combine their experience with our experience to create the best team possible."

Before attending the competition, potential shooters need to obtain permission from their commands.

Intramurals will be a Marine's appointed place of duty until Nov. 2.

Marines selected for the Depot team will also be required to compete for three weeks at the division matches at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, N.C. If the Parris Island team makes it past the division matches, it means another three weeks at MCB Camp Lejeune for the Marine Corps Championships in April.

The process for entering the intramural competition already started with a team captains meeting Oct. 7. Another welcome aboard meeting for all personnel is scheduled for 1 p.m. today.

However, Ledford agreed to allow last minute shooters who show up in time for the 6 a.m. mandatory class Monday at the indoor pistol range.

"I definitely recommend coming to try out," said Sgt. Matthew Campbell, another one of Depot's FY07 Rifle and Pistol Team members, and an instructor for the intramurals. "Broaden your understanding of Marine Corps marksmanship. You can also gain knowledge to take back and improve marksmanship within your command."
