Report: Terror war may take years to fix

LONDON, Oct. 8 (UPI) -- A report from Britain’s Oxford Research Group says it will take at least 10 years to undo the mistakes made since the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks.

The report said that after six years, the “war on terror” has not achieved its purpose, but instead given al-Qaida exactly what it wants, said a press release from ORG.

The report, entitled “Towards Sustainable Security -- Alternatives to the War on Terror,” points out that after terminating the Taliban regime in Afghanistan, Taliban militias have been re-invigorated and the country is now the world's largest producer of heroin.

Another mistake that the report claims is the occupation of Iraq. It is allegedly providing a jihadist combat training zone for future generations of al-Qaida supporters, the report said, "comparable to the insurgents fighting the Soviet troops in the 1980s except that their training is against well-equipped and highly trained US soldiers and Marines.”

Professor Paul Rogers, the author of the report, says if al-Qaida is to be stopped, there must be an understanding and then a systematical undercutting of its support.

If successful “it will still take at least 10 years to make up for the mistakes made since 9/11,” said Rogers.
