Marines,

To start off, if you want to better understand my background, please check out the Poolee Hall forum and read the thread entitled "Strength and Honor". Next, I have some questions, and I ask that you answer them as best you can (please).

1) What items make up the Marine Corps fatigues? I want to start dressing like a Marine... "You start dressing like a Marine, you'll start feeling like a Marine. You start feeling like a Marine, you'll start acting like a Marine." -Clint Eastwood, Heartbreak Ridge.(i.e. The basic items that Marines wear when they're training or just going about their daily business.)
2) I'm starting a club at my school called the "Martial Training and Defense Team", whose basic purpose is to teach members how to use their bodies as protection and to prepare members for their military branch of choosing. Is it illegal to rip off MCMAP moves and use them? Where could I go (except recruit training) to learn MCMAP? I'm an adept boxer and wrestler, but MCMAP, I've learned, is the best way to get an opponent dead before you get hurt.
3) Is there a book I can get that teaches all the specific details of being a Marine (i.e. standing at attention, rifle maintenance, other protocols, etc)?

Thanks

Well, Brutus, first thing first. To get you feeling like a Marine let's get you over to an Army surplus store so you can buy a set of cammies. But don't forget to pin on some SgtMaj chevrons. Get yourself a nice pair of Bates and a black MCMAP instructors belt and you're all set.

Seriously, why would you want to dress like a Marine if you're not a Marine? You know why I don't wear a Walmart vest? Because I don't work at Walmart!

'feeling like' is same same as no dirt under the finger nails or skinned knees, posing, until boot camp is about done with. You'll find a new branch of feelers that cant be tapped by reading and playing.
Is there a book I can get that teaches all the specific details of being a MarineSure theres a guide book, ask your sales rep about it. Better read it now, you wont have much quality time too appreciate the material during basic training, but then again you may not get the real feel for it now. Its good to be prepped though, smart for asking.

Well, Old Salt, first, Marines don't wear "fatigues." That is a dogface and air fart term.

Second, save the "dressing like a Marine" for when you go in, unless you are in a Marine JROTC unit.

Third, MCMAP is a killing style, not a sport. In today's school atmosphere, the last thing you want to do is dress in "fatigues" and teach other kids killing techniques.

Fourth, there are a ton of resources on this site and on the Internet just for the effort of some search engine work.

Thanks BR03, that's exactly what I was waiting for.

You know what, if you really want to dress like a Marine, check out grunt.com and look for the digital cammies. It may be one of the dumbest things I've ever heard- but if you want to do it you can at least give some money to a Marine.

As for MCMAP, there is nothing illegal about it. You can find the manuals online and play with the stuff all you want. But, unless you have someone to instruct you properly you are either going to fail to learn what is important or someone is going to get hurt very badly.

All I have to say is that I love the Corps, whether I'm in it or not. And I love the actual Marines more than I love the Corps. I guess what I meant above is that I want to be squared away and disciplined. God! I don't need a big Marine Corps logo slapped on my forehead to feel like one, do I!? MCMAP is good, but I won't even try to learn it yet. You guys and gals just keep fighting. If you're in the Middle East (or anywhere, here or abroad), then you're meant to be there. Once I'm out of high school, if this war isn't over, I'll see you in person. I thank you all for the protection you give me and my family. Because of you and the rest of the military, we're all allowed to live the lives we do. I'm just another American/Marine hopeful with alot of pride for my country. Again, thanks.

Brutus, you don't have to have an EGA on to feel like a Marine. But honestly, until you are one it will be impossible to feel like one. You have no idea what it means to be a Marine- no matter how badly you want to be one.

Maybe you don't remember, but Gunny Highway was talking to Marines when he said that. Since you're not a Marine, you can conduct yourself with military bearing without having to wear any sort of uniform. Military Bearing is that poise and conduct that you see in Marines whether they are in or out of uniform. They stand up straight, they walk with confidence, and address others with respect and propriety. We don't lean against walls, put our hands in our pockets, or do anything that makes us look "back on the block."

All you have to do is wear your clothes properly. Tuck in your shirt, always wear a belt, and wear your pants properly (that means with the waistband above your hips and not showing skivvies!) Last but not least, get a high and tight haircut.

I'm not sure how today's politically correct faculty is going to react to your idea. Regardless, you should not try to teach anything to anyone you are not an expert in. Boxing and wrestling are sports. Trying to train someone in MCMAP techniques can lead to serious injury if you don't know what you're doing or do not have a proper facility.

3) Is there a book I can get that teaches all the specific details of being a Marine (i.e. standing at attention, rifle maintenance, other protocols, etc)?

No, but there's a life experience called Recruit Training that takes care of all that education for you.

It HAS to be tattooed on before you get that funny little feeling. :p

Thanks all for the advice. I do have a H&T cut, and I just need to get my clothes and mannerisms more clean cut. Again, thanks.

Yes, there is, and I'm sure he can find one on ebay or something if he really wants to pretend to be a Marine.

Hell, a good fake Marine is better than a bad fake Marine...I guess.

Join, you are not a Marine unless you claim the title. You can dress in all the funny gear you want, but I am a Marine because I have earned it! I do not serve because I have a uniform. I serve to train Marines, lead Marines, and fight for my brother to my left and right. To ensure that my county is free, and all my boys get home safe. This can only be attained in the Corps!

Understood, sir. I think that from now until I speak to a recruiter, I'll just make sure I'm eating right, getting good sleep, exercising, and getting my homework done right and on time.
