Like any other wannabee Marine, my dream is to become a scout-sniper or Recon man. :)

I do not know for sure... but I'm assuming that after I finish up bootcamp and all the necessary training for my specific MOS, I will be heading out to Iraq.

My question is, If i get shipped off to war immediately, will there be time for me to take the Scout-Sniper, or Recon Indoc?

Let's say there is time, and I do succeed the indoc, but I still am scheduled to ship out on a specific date, Will I be shipped out that date or do I get a chance to attend Scout-Sniper/Recon school first?

Thanks alot,
-Tim

Be a Marine First. The training will find you. Yes we are a small poor Service in the Pentagon budget. But we still train good Marines when they stand up.

I agree take it one step at a time. Take the PFT very serious, as well as the rifle range. Listen to your instructors and coaches. Also the swim qual is important for recon, so put fourth effort in all of the above.

There is no way to look into the future. But, if you went to SOI today you'd have a chance to take the Recon indoc. Few pass it, and I wouldn't just assume I'd pass- no matter what kind of shape you're in. And, even if you do pass, you have to be selected- so there is no promise.

As for being a sniper- I've never seen a boot Scout Sniper. It may happen, but it isn't the most common thing. From everything I've seen you have to prove yourself before you're getting that opportunity.

Unfortunately Recon has gotten rid of their review board. A Marine is no longer required to go before a selection board to get into Recon...It's some stupid political BS because the higher ups want to increase the number of Recon Marines so they just did away with it. Still not easy to get in however.

not that this has anything to do with it but i just read they are trying to get permission to move out of Iraq and let the army handle it and go into AFghanistan. if its approved but a lot of people are going for it for lots of reasons..
