So I'm in the DEP and I'm going to ship out anywhere from this Jan. 2008 to this March 2008. My MOS is cryptic linguist, but my recruiter and the gny sgt at MEPS said the chances of me actually getting into that field aren't very high, as there aren't that many jobs available and stuff. Are there people out there who are knowledgeable about this topic? I'm desperate, because it's very scary not knowing if the career you've chosen for yourself is going to happen...

What does your contract say? I imagine it's something to the tune of "26xx or 02xx". What does it say for the MOS?

As in all aspects of the Marine Corps there are rules to follow. Please read the ROE and fill in your profile. Maybe then the Marines here will be more apt to help you.

He meant the rules of the site in Poolee Hall.
ROE means rules of engagement.

Oh, how funny! I am shooting questions out like there's no tomorrow. I just want to be as prepared as humanly possible for Parris Island, even though I know it's not really possible at all..

Emma,, It is possible to be prepared. Do 14 years of Boy Scouts in 2 weeks,,, Become a Shoulynn Munk in another 2 weeks,, and attain E-4 in the Army in a month. Then you will be a little prepared,,,;]

First of all, its Cryptologic Linguist, not Cryptic-Linguist. Although I guess we can be "cryptic" at times.

Have you taken a DLAB test yet? You need to take that test and score high enough on it to even be eligible for 267x school at DLI to start with.

Are you a likely candidate for a Top Secret-SCI clearance? If you have non-citizen parents or criminal history or bad credit etc, you are not likely going to get a clearance and they usually "pre-screen" candidates for clearances before they start school.

If you do get in, there is no guarantee on what language you will end up getting though. That is all based on what the needs of the Corps are projected out two years to when you will finally hit the fleet if graduate, and also on what classes are starting and on what classes have spots for Marines (Marine Corps at DLI is very small, usually less than 100 students while the Army, Navy, Air Force, etc. have much larger contingents of students and thus they fill up the classes first. I was the only Marine in my class (Korean) although in some languages, there were a lot more Marines per class (such as Arabic).

I got a 125 on the DLAB and I am fortunately eligible for a top security clearance. I know there's no guarantee about what language I'll get. I don't mind. I just really like learning new ones. I already speak four, so.. but my main issue was just needing info about how often these jobs really open up, u know? because I realize it must not be that often.. My recruiter and I just changed my contract to intel, so at least if that cryptologist job doesn't open up by the time I go to basic, I will be in the general intel field, though I still have to come up with ideas for which jobs I would want to spring for at first. Thanks for the reply!! Everyone on here is so helpful
