When the staff sergeant board lets out Friday, more sergeants will be slated to pin on rockers than in any year since officials began publishing the numbers online in 1999, according to the Corps’ Web site.

Corps-wide messages released before the board convened in July allotted 4,438 promotion slots for sergeants, a 47 percent increase over the previous fiscal year — when the Corps promoted roughly 1,500 fewer sergeants into the staff noncommissioned officer ranks.

The infantry field, which historically enjoys the largest slice of staff sergeant promotion allocations, is slated to pick up 492 selections when the board lets out, a 149.7 percent increase over the 197 sergeants promoted last year, according to MarAdmin 320/07.

The most dramatic increase in allocations since last year is slated for the light attack helicopter mechanic community, where 55 sergeants will be selected for promotion by the board, an eight-fold increase over last year’s allocations.

The jump in allocations follows a 14 percent spike in allocations for gunnery sergeant promotions last fiscal year, which officials attributed to the announcement that the Corps must increase active-duty end strength by 5,000 Marines each year until 2011, when troop levels are expected to reach 202,000.
