Military exchange online and catalog stores sold 2,019 of the Kolcraft play yards that have been voluntarily recalled by the company in cooperation with the Consumer Product Safety Commission, because of possible strangulation and suffocation hazards.

But military families should note that the recall involves about 425,000 play yards of 12 different types that have been sold in numerous retail stores around the country. A complete list of all the recalled play yards is available on the CPSC Web site.

A 10-month-old child was strangled on the changing table’s restraint strap that was hanging down into Kolcraft’s “Sesame Beginnings” Travel Play Yard.

In addition to the strangulation hazard, Kolcraft has received 45 reports of children rolling to the side of the rocking cradle attachment in the Contours 3-in-1 Play Yard. If a child rolls to the side and gets trapped against the cradle, he or she could suffocate.

The play yards, which were manufactured in China, were sold at stores nationwide from January 2001 through September 2007, priced between $50 and $130, according to the CPSC.

All the play yards have raised changing tables with a restraint strap that forms a loop beneath the changing table, posing a strangulation hazard to a child in the play yard, according to the CPSC.

The CPSC warns consumers to:

** Immediately stop using the changing tables and rocking cradle and contact the firm for instructions on receiving a free non-looped replacement strap for the changing table, and a free repair kit to secure the base of the cradle. Contact Kolcraft at (88 655-8484 any time.

** Immediately cut off and remove the existing changing table restraint strap.

Consumers should always remove the raised changing table and cradle or bassinet before placing a child in the play yard.

Model numbers for the play yards are printed on a white sticker on one of the yard’s feet. According to officials with the Army and Air Force Exchange Service, the play yards sold through the military exchange online and catalog stores — which affect all service branches’ online exchange stores and catalogs — include:

** Kolcraft Travelin’ Tot 4-in-1, model number 18751-DV, sold in 2006. “Kolcraft” and “Travelin’ Tot” are printed on either the fabric on the top rail or on the lower side of the play yards.

** Carter’s Lennon Travelin’ Tot, model number 18737-LJ. “Carter’s” and “Travelin’ Tot” are printed on the top rail.

** “Sesame Beginnings” by Kolcraft Travel Play Yard, model number SP001-SBK. “Sesame Beginnings” and “Travel Play Yard Kolcraft” are printed on the top rail or along the fabric draft guard on the lower side of the play yards.
