Senate panel considers Mattis for fourth star

The Senate Armed Services Committee on Thursday is considering whether to approve President Bush’s nomination of Lt. Gen. Jim Mattis as head of U.S. Joint Forces Command and NATO’s supreme allied commander of transformation, according to an Armed Forces Press Service release.
If confirmed by the Senate, Mattis, currently the dual-hatted commander of I Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Pendleton, Calif., and Marine Corps Forces Central Command in Tampa, Fla., would pin on a fourth star in conjunction with his new assignment in Norfolk, Va.
