Gunny’s death ruled a suicide

JACKSONVILLE, N.C. — A gunnery sergeant based at Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, S.C., was found shot to death several feet from his vehicle off a South Carolina highway last week.
The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office has ruled the death of Gunnery Sgt. Steve D. Eller, 32, of Toccoa, Ga., a suicide, according to The Beaufort Gazette.
Eller, an aircraft electronic systems technician with Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 115, was found about 50 feet from his vehicle near state Route 802 on Sept. 20, according to an air station press release. Local authorities found him after he’d been reported missing that night.
“Our deepest condolences go out to the Marine’s family and unit throughout this difficult time,” air station officials said in a press release Monday.
Eller joined the Corps on June 21, 1993, and was promoted to gunnery sergeant Aug. 1.
