Two bodies were found Monday inside a burning car in the remote desert outside U.S. Marine Corps training grounds in Joshua Tree, officials said.

Just after 2 p.m., San Bernardino County firefighters responded to reports of a cabin on fire in the 65000 block of Saturn Street, but upon their arrival, discovered that a car was instead on fire, said San Bernardino County sheriff's spokeswoman Arden Wiltshire.

The abandoned cabin had previously burned, Wiltshire said.

When firefighters extinguished the car fire, and a small brush blaze that had ignited next to it, they saw the burning bodies. Their age, sex or cause of death weren't immediately known.

Detectives from the sheriff's Morongo Basin station and the arson and bomb squad were called to the scene, and would determine if homicide investigators needed to be alerted, Wiltshire said.

The property, near the corner of Cady Road, is set off a dirt path less than a mile south of the Marines' Air Ground Combat Training Center.
