Free Press wins national Emmy for 'Band of Brothers' video

A gritty, riveting video by Detroit Free Press staffers showing Michigan Marines training for the war in Iraq won a national Emmy award tonight from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.
The academy, awarding its 28th annual news and documentary awards, gave top honors to "Michigan Marines: Band of Brothers” in the category of current news coverage for broadband. The video, produced for freep.com, was the work of producers and photographers David P. Gilkey, Stephen McGee, Kathleen Galligan and Hugh Grannum, and reporters John Masson and Joe Swickard. "Band of Brothers" beat out videos by four other national news organizations: PBS' Frontline, nationalgeographic.com, newsweek.com and washingtonpost.com.
Free Press staffers also were nominated for, but did not win, two other Emmys, for a video of the state's favorite winter pasttime, ice fishing, and an emotion-packed video of accused Troy office shooter Anthony LaCalamita appearing in court.
The Free Press had three nominations in the first-ever Emmy categories for broadband media, a recognition that video production is escaping the bonds of television transmission. The Free Press entries were all produced for www.freep.com.
The photo and multimedia staffs and freep.com are led by Deputy Managing Editor/Online Nancy Andrews. Also helping direct and create the projects were Craig Porter, director of photography and video, and Kathy Kieliszewski, deputy director of photography and video.
“We're enormously proud of our winners,” said Free Press vice president and editor Paul Anger. “The Detroit Free Press has won eight Pulitzers and now a national Emmy - that's amazing considering that we shot our first video less than two years ago, but we have an amazing staff.”
“And this recognition underscores that the Free Press is more than a newspaper and freep.com is more than a traditional newspaper Web site. We're committed to presenting digital news and information in many ways -- and Band of Brothers is an example of that. There'll be more and more as time goes along on freep.com.”
The other two nominations were:
• Arts, lifestyles & culture programming: "Ice Fishing" reported by outdoor writer Eric Sharp; producer-photographer David P. Gilkey. The winner in that category was PBS' Frontline for a video entitled, "Libya: Out of the Shadows."
• Regional news coverage "La Calamita in Court," about the accused killer's day in court after he allegedly killed one person and injured two others at a Troy office building. The video's producers-photographers were Stephen McGee and Mandi Wright. The San Francisco Chronicle won this category with the video, "Prisoners guide teens on a tour of San Quentin."
Ted Koppel, longtime ABC anchor and now managing editor of Discovery Channel, was honored with this year's Lifetime Achievement Award at the black-tie gala, held at the Sheraton New York Hotel & Towers.

When the 1/24th Marine unit ships out, it will be the largest single Marine Reserve deployment from Michigan in the war on terror.
