The San Luis Obispo Tribune

A group of injured veterans are surfing in Pismo Beach this week under the guidance of local amputee surfing champion Rodney Roller and host of volunteers including surfers form the Billabong Camps Program.

The weeklong event, called Operation Restoration, brought the veterans from the Brooke Army Medical Center in Texas to Pismo Beach. The participating soldiers and marines lost limbs or were burned while serving in Afghanistan and Iraq.

This is the second clinic put together by a Texas based nonprofit Operation Comfort. The public is invited to the beach and show support for the veterans from 8 a.m. to noon today through Thursday. Community members are also invited to a luau for the troops from 3 to 6 p.m. today at Mongo’s Saloon Restaurant and Sports Bar in Grover Beach. -- AnnMarie Cornejo
