A quick-thinking Coast Guardsman deputized an unlikely helper Sept. 15 to help save a sinking boat in Gloucester Harbor, Mass., the Coast Guard said — making his debut with the lifesaving service was SpongeBob SquarePants, of children’s television fame.

More precisely, Machinery Technician 2nd Class Daniel Bartholomew reached for a SpongeBob football when he responded to a 25-foot pleasure boat with a bad leak. Coast Guard rescuers used a powerful pump to clear out enough seawater to keep the vessel afloat, but with no other way to plug the leak, they went to SpongeBob.

Bartholomew plugged the football into the tear in the boat’s hull, which enabled the Coast Guard to tow it into the yard for repairs.

“Luckily, SpongeBob got a day off, so he was available to assist us with this rescue,” said Chief Boatswain’s Mate Paul Wells, executive petty officer at Coast Guard Station Gloucester.
