New Britain (WTNH) _ Members of the military celebrated at a memorial dedication in New Britain today.

Connecticut veterans waited six years to honor a local hero and hundreds of Marines who belong to the Marine Corps League. The organization is devoted to service men and women and their families.

"Oddly enough, there's an awful lot of people that are in the Marine Corps or have been in the Marine Corps and aren't aware that there's a Marine Corps League for veterans, just for Marines," said Jack Dougherty of the Marine Corps League.

A small bridge at Routes 9 and 372 was dedicated to Lt. Sherrod Skinner, a New Britain Marine who gave his life for his country during the Korean War.

Sam Beamon remembered today the sacrifice Lt. Skinner made for his brothers during the war.

"When the enemy left they threw one last grenade in and Lt. Skinner threw his body on the grenade and absorbed the full force of it," Beamon said.

Beamon hopes people who pass by the newly dedicated bridge will take the time to find out who Lt. Skinner was and learn what it means to serve this country with honor.

"You can forget about God and country. It's your fellow man and these are your fellow Marines there and he sacrificed his life so they could live," said Beamon.

Another roadway in New Britain was also dedicated today to the Marine Corps League and members hope it the sign will serve as a permanent advertisement for a group who pride themselves on tradition.
