BRITONS BACKING WAR

A large majority of Britons believe that war in Iraq should be seen through to a successful conclusion, according to a poll.

Despite 23 British deaths and fears the conflict will drag on for months, just 11% of those questioned believe UK troops should be withdrawn.

The survey by ICM Research for the News of the World found 84% in favour of continuing war until its objectives had been achieved.

Pre-war polls regularly found large majorities opposed to military action.

But now it has begun, surveys have shown Britons rallying behind troops.

The poll suggests Tony Blair has the support of 50% of the public in his handling of the Iraq crisis - five points down on a similar survey last week, but well up on his rating before hostilities commenced. Some 39% were critical of his stance.

A majority - 58% - agreed with the Coalition strategy of seeking to minimise civilian casualties, which has been blamed over recent days for limiting the military effectiveness of Coalition troops.

Just 19% of respondents said the conflict should be escalated, with full-scale assaults to capture the key cities of Baghdad and Basra, while 12% thought the Allies should adopt a "wait and see" policy of laying siege to the cities in the hope of Iraqi surrender.
