According to the ball and chain, (appointment book) hunting season here in the great Northwest will soon be in full swing. Besides the same ole' same ole' with customers: discussing moisture wicking properties of long drawers, Sasquatch sign and that Boone and Crocket Behemoth Rack___that always seems to be glassed just out of rifle range___i've been picking brains about GPS.

The general consensus is that with all the advancements in technology, Outdoorsmen are NOT noticing increased accuracy in fixing a position and sometimes less than before the turn of the century.

An Intel, Hardware Technician Guy/Hunter says: Dave, if your gathering signals from at least 4 satellites under ideal conditions and your position is still suspect? Its not the reciever. P-Code Service is the most accurate and not available to the public. Standard Positioning Service is less accurate and available to anybody with a GPS reciever. The government also reserves the rights to randomly "tweek" Standard signals making this service even less accurate.

Ok, well im still an old school map and compass guy, probably because it took awhile to learn and alot of time spent errrr "disoriented" in the boonies and i really dont need to nail a checkpoint or final destination within a few feet of accurate. But when i do its worthy of a 'hole in one' dance and a couple extra cool beverages at the Cantina

P.S. Montana, maybe some year we could work a shoeing swap for a guided Elk hunt?
