Could you invent a “wearable power” gizmo and win $1 million?

The Defense Department is casting a wide net for help in reducing the battery burden on troops in the field. Officials are looking for a “wearable power system” that lasts four days and significantly reduces the weight of current systems carried in the field.

The competition is open to the public, and first prize will be $1 million. Second place is worth $500,000; third place gets $250,000. Teams and individuals can compete. Registration opens Oct. 8, and the deadline for submitting forms is Nov. 30. Registration is free.

A public information forum will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 21 at the Federal Gateway Conference Center, 1100 New Jersey Ave., Suite 200, Washington, D.C. Those who plan to attend the forum must register by Monday, Sept. 17.

Details will be given about the competition, objectives, rules, procedures, notification of intent to compete, and the current plan for the Fall 2008 competition week. Army and Marine Corps officials will be there to provide information and answer questions on current war-fighter power requirements and the battery burden. All presentations and a list of acceptable battery chemistries and fuels for use in the competition will be posted on the Defense Department’s Wearable Power Prize Competition Web site.

According to the Web site, the winning criteria is the lightest system — entries must weigh no more than four kilograms (just under nine pounds) — that meets the total energy requirements as demonstrated in the competition. It should provide an average 20 watts of electric power for 96 hours, with peak operation up to 200 watts.

During the competition week, judges will monitor both parts of the competitive demonstration and accompany competitors during the field trials.
