CUMBERLAND — Six members of the Mountainside Marines, De-tachment 1071 of Cumberland, were recently invited guests of the Commandant of the Marine Corps, James Conway, at Marine Barracks, Washington.

The evening began with a reception in the garden of the home of the commandant, which also included a tour of his home, which has been the home of all but two commandants dating to 1806. Now a National Historic Landmark, it is the oldest continually occupied building in Washington.

Among those in attendance were local residents Marine Corps League Chaplain Gary Cannon and his wife Betty, China Marines Paul Lease and his wife Flo, Brooks Atkinson and Tom Sines; and Iwo Jima veterans Bob Filkosky and Bill Menges, who was accompanied by his son Joel of Lancaster, Pa.

Other attendees included celebrities representing a variety of occupations, including ambassadors from Germany, Sierra Leone and Laos. A total of 31 nations were represented.

The guest of honor for the evening was U.S. Sen. James Webb of Virginia, a highly decorated Marine officer during the Vietnam War. Also present was actor Chuck Norris, star of the television series “Walker, Texas Ran-ger.”

Following the reception, guests were escorted to their seats for the evening parade which is a long-standing tradition every Friday during the summer months as the Marine Barracks. The event is a display of military and musical professionalism performed by “The President’s Own” Marine Corps Band and “The Commandant’s Own” Marine Corps Drum and Bugle Corps.

A presentation by the Silent Drill Platoon capped the patriotic program for the evening.

League member Jeff Hampton and Brig. Gen. James C. Walker were liaisons and instrumental in securing Iwo Jima and China veterans locally.
