Emotional Sendoff Sunday As Fox Company Marines Start Tour

Mon Sep 17, 12:02 AM ET

Emotions ran high Sunday during a sendoff for 180 Marines heading to war.

Members of the Fox Company, 2nd Battalion, 24th Marines have been called for duty in Iraq, some for the second time.

"Emotionally, I'm doing well. I'm sure the waterworks will start tonight. For the time being, I'm happy for him, proud of him," Dave Lee, the brother of John Lee, a Fox Company Marine, said. John Lee is 19 years old and joined the Corps as soon as he became an adult.

The Ley family is sending two boys off to war. Brad is going for his second tour. He convinced his cousin, August, to join, and August is going on his first tour.

"They're going to be in good hands, watching each other's backs. I feel very safe for that," August's father, Jeffrey, said.

Jeffrey sounded confident, but his misty eyes told a different story.

The Fox Company Marines lost five members of their unit during its first deployment in 2004. This tour begins with a stop in California, for training, with orders for an Iraq tour coming after Christmas.
