JACKSONVILLE, N.C. — A corporal killed Sept. 9 in Afghanistan was part of a West Coast-based Marine special operations company, a spokesman for special operations forces in the Middle East confirmed Sept. 14.

The death of Cpl. Travis M. Woods marks the first combat-related fatality for Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command, said Army Lt. Col. Louis Leto, spokesman for Special Operations Command-Central Command.

The 21-year-old from Redding, Calif., was killed by a roadside bomb in the Northern Helmand province, Leto said.

“He was on a recon patrol,” he said.

A press release from Camp Pendleton, Calif., listed Woods as a field wireman with 3rd Battalion, 1st Marines. He joined the Marine Corps on Sept. 8, 2003.

That battalion was Woods’ unit of origin, but it was unclear as of press time why he was not listed as a member of the MSOC by either the base or Defense Department press releases announcing his death.

Members of 3/1 are operating in Iraq as the battalion landing team for the Pendleton-based 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit.
