JACKSONVILLE, N.C. — Members of Camp Lejeune, N.C.-based 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit began training in Kuwait on Thursday, according to a MEU press release.

The training is designed to enhance combat skills and refine desert operations, MEU commanding officer Col. Doug Stilwell said in the release.

“We have an ambitious training schedule ahead of us,” he said. “Since departing Camp Lejeune, we have not been able to bring all elements and personnel of the MEU together as we were spread across the ships of the Kearsarge [Expeditionary] Strike Group. The training in Kuwait will allow us to stay focused and ready to complete any mission asked of us.”

Once the training is complete, Marines and sailors of the MEU are scheduled to rejoin the ships of the ESG and continue maritime security operations.

The Norfolk, Va.-based strike group entered the Persian Gulf earlier this month.

Since sailing from the North Carolina coast Aug. 31, the MEU has supported several community-relations projects throughout the Mediterranean. Recently, the MEU helped offload humanitarian supplies destined for local schools, an orphanage and an AIDS clinic in Djibouti.
