PEORIA - A reservist with a Peoria County-based Marine Corps unit was injured this week in what is being described as a noncombat vehicle accident.

First Sgt. Casey Samborski with Company C, 6th Engineer Support Battalion confirmed the Marine was injured while recovering vehicles in Iraq. The reservist, who was part of a group that left a week ago for Iraq after nearly two months of training, suffered a hip injury.

Samborski said the reservist, whose name is being withheld until today, will likely be flown to Germany for further care.

Details are sketchy, but it appears the Marine was injured a couple of hours from his base at Taqaddum, located in the Anbar Province in western Iraq.

He was stabilized at the scene, brought back to his base and then transported to another camp in Iraq. He contacted his parents Tuesday, Samborski said. Military regulations require a certain amount of time to pass before the media is notified of a soldier's name and hometown.

The Marine was activated along with about 80 others in June, roughly half of Company C. It was the unit's third large-scale mobilization since the war began in 2003. Roughly half of the Marines activated this time arrived in Iraq earlier this month as part of the 6th Engineer Support Battalion. Over the summer, they merged with others around the country and trained in North Carolina before leaving for Iraq.

The other 40 or so Marines who were mobilized are preparing to depart for Iraq after a few months of training in California with another Marine unit.

The reservists were mobilized for a period of up to one year.
