Lt. Gen. James Mattis, the commander of U.S. Marine Corps Forces Central Command, speaks to Marines with Marine Wing Support Group 27, May 6. The Corps announced Sept. 11 that Mattis had been nominated for a fourth star and to take command of U.S. Joint Forces Command in Norfolk, Va.

If President Bush’s nomination is approved by the Senate, the next commander of U.S. Joint Forces Command will be a general who has commanded Marines at every echelon from platoon to Marine expeditionary force, according to a Sept. 11 Defense Department release.

Lt. Gen. James Mattis, currently the dual-hatted commander of I Marine Expeditionary Force in Camp Pendleton, Calif., and Marine Corps Forces Central Command in Tampa, Fla., has been recommended for a fourth star and appointment to the joint forces billet in Norfolk, Va., according to the release.

Under an agreement between the U.S. and NATO, Mattis will also become that organization’s “supreme allied commander transformation” if confirmed by the Senate, according to the release.
