We're in good hands of Marines

I was proud to serve with 2nd Platoon, M Company 3/5, 1st Marine Division in Vietnam in 1967-68. In looking forward to the commemoration of Sept. 11, I journeyed to Camp Pendleton in order to look back to honor the fallen of Operation Swift (Sept. 4-17, 1967). On Sept. 4, 1967, Mike Company suffered 50 percent casualties and 2nd Platoon lost 75 percent killed in action or wounded. There were two Medals of Honor, three Navy Crosses and a Silver Star, all posthumously awarded for heroic actions on that day.

On Sept. 4 of this year, we embraced the survivors of that battle and for the future. I salute our current Marines, some of whom I met while at Camp Pendleton. To the public, I would like to say: Rest assured, today's Marines are the best prepared to face the war on terrorism, are courageous, and are the few, the proud. Semper Fi, Marines.
