Well i just got back from a trip to the Marine Corps Museum....and what an experience it was...I went with my brother who is a Corporal on pre-deployment leave...also with a fellow poolee who is going with me in the buddy program,and one of my cousins taged along.
We all enjoyed ourselves and each others company....
While we were standing in front of the Medal of Honor Recipients Wall, a Marine Vietnam Veteran pointed to one of the many faces and told me that he was with him the day before he was killed....all I could say was "REALLY!!" he told me in a very emotional way with almost tears in his eyes "Yes"...that just gave me an overwhelming feeling of pride...
I was just wondering has any one else been there and how was it...:flag:
thanks

For everyone's info, there is a Museum at MCRD, San Diego. They have a lot of interesting items there.

Haven't been to the museum yet but, I'm sure I will some day. You get the same feeling at the Wall too (or at least I did) - there are a lot of ghosts.

Like many of you, 'Nam was before my day. So was Korea and WW II. But the pride and history is still in our blood. A few years back several of us got together at D.C. for a leatherneck reunion. http://www.leatherneck.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6980&highlight=wallMet Shaffer, CAS3, Freebird, Drifter (R.I.P.) and Ms. Ellie, as well as a few others. I had relayd WHY it was important for me to visit 'the wall'. But I was NOT prepared for the emotion that over flowed my senses. I was... to saw awe inspiring, comes up short. Truly hallowed ground, and the tears flowed free.... and still do.
But... it was before my day. So I asked Drifter WHY ??? Why was something I'd never experienced so deep into my soul. Why did it hurt so bad.
In his calm deliberate voice, a voice of knowledge and genuine concern for his fellow Marine;
"BECAUSE YOU UNDERSTAND IT"
Ghosts at the wall..... without a doubt. And I'm glad they were there to touch me, my soul, my life. And I have no doubt that they are added to each day that we lose another Veteran of that time. And, I can only pray, that I've left a piece of my ghost there with them. To comfort, to watch over, to remember.

Next time this happens to you, shake his hand, pat him on the shoulder, tell him "thank you for your service" and "Welcome Home". I get "star struck" every time I get around Vietnam Vets - I was young (almost 8) but, old enough to know what was going on especially when my Uncle left in Feb 69 - he was gone by Aug 69. In my eyes these guys are the coolest generation (might be cause I ain't THAT far behind them ;) ) - they have some of the coolest stories and pictures and tales to tell that make you wonder how they EVER did things that they did and live to tell about it. Sit and talk to one for a while.........................
Following the link from another post about the museum brought me here. The Marines I enjoy talking to the most are from Korea. It is a time all but forgoten. There is a lot published about Vietnam and WWII, but Korea has become little more than an insignifiacant foot note in history. What those men did and lived through is amazing. Please understand,I'm not taking anything away from the men in the other conflicts and wars. If you ever get to talk with one you will learn a lot.
The museum is very motivating and stirs a lot of emotion.
