For the third year in a row, the Pentagon will open its doors to the public this weekend to mark the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attack.

Brief public tours will be available Saturday and Sunday as part of a series of commemorative events.

One hundred eighty-nine people were killed when American Airlines Flight 77 rammed into the south flank of the Pentagon on Sept. 11 and burst into flames.

The commemorative events will include the America Supports You Freedom Walk, a Defense Department program that aims to connect citizens and corporations with military personnel and their families serving at home and abroad, according to a Defense Department press release.

“It’s going to be a tour of the crash site area and the indoor memorial,” Air Force Tech. Sgt. Joshua Hodgin, director of the Pentagon’s tour program, said in the release.

The chapel adjacent to the indoor memorial will be open, as well, and visitors will have the chance to view the indoor memorial and the site of the outdoor memorial.

Tour guides will direct visitors to the tour’s starting point at the 3rd Corridor entrance, where they’ll pass through a quick security scan. Only small bags will be allowed and they will be scanned in an X-ray machine.

The use of restrooms and drinking fountains will be prohibited, as will the use of any electronic devices, including cell phones and cameras.

There is limited parking available at the Pentagon, so visitors are urged to travel by Metrorail.

According to the press release, 5,000 people participated last year and a similar number are expected to attend this year.
