War and Remembrance, an installation of images recently acquired for the Houston Museum’s permanent collection, includes the earliest known print of one of the most famous war photographs of all time: the raising of the American flag on Iwo Jima by five Marines and one Navy Corpsman on February 23, 1945.

Associated Press photographer Joe Rosenthal won the Pulitzer Prize for this landmark photograph later that year.

Also on view are works from World War II by Robert Capa—often called the greatest war photographer—who landed on Omaha Beach with the first wave of D-Day forces; photographs taken in 2004 as a eulogy to the men who landed on D-Day beaches; and two images from the Vietnam War.

The exhibition is on view through September 16, 2007 at the Caroline Wiess Law Building.

The picture shows Karol Smith, Lone Marine and Flag, Mount Suribachi, 1945 The MFAH, gift of an anonymous donor in honor of Will Michels, Karol Smith Archive.
