In 1972 I bought a 1969 Mustang in California while stationed at the Airfield at Camp Pendleton. I will always remember that car because of the problem getting it registered on base. At that time they didnt allow altered exhausts etc to get a base sticker I had just bought the car from a dealer in town... I went right back to him he put the car on the hoist, the car was loaded, Hurst 4 speed, tranny, 390 duel exhaust well everything was stock. Well he copied the specs from a manual to give to the base... meanwhile he had called the base when I got back to the base I was waved off to the side and they gave me my sticker, apologized about the mixup I never even had to present the info, I guess the dealer had some pull someplace. That car was so fast... I could go down to the beach and go through all four gears and the car not even move just burning the tires...

In 1968 I had a '60 T-Bird with a 390. Drove the damn thing from gas station to gas station. I could make it from Pittsburgh to Weirton, WVA in about 15 minutes going about 110-115 mph. I'm lucky that I didn't die in that car.

Had a '69 Mach 1 when I joined the Corps. Orginally came with the 351 Windsor, and I replaced it with the 351 Cleveland. Over the course of the years I had it punched 30 over, balanced and blueprinted, dual quads installed, along with nitrous. Eventually had it tubbed, installed a 4 point roll cage, and replaced the orginal hood with a fiberglass replica. Had it painted metal flake blue with gold flames and a logo across the back that said, "I'd rather eat worms, than drive a Chevy!" ;) Won many a dollar running stop light to stop light with that beast. I finally ended up selling it three years ago to a Mustang collector. He made me an offer I couldn't refuse, but I sure do miss that car.

I remember that one of the guys back in 1971 as I was getting out of the service had a big Dodge Charger that he ran for pink slips. He was a Sgt. and enlisted for 4 years and was about to get out. He kept the car and was looking forward to racing again.

When I got home from Nam Jan 66 I got a 66 Pontiac Tempest Sprint Conv. It had the overhead cam 6 cyl engine with a hurst 4 sped on the floor, a rodchester Quad 4 barl. That thing would really go.
Mothers day 66 I was on my way to Jersey from Quantico to see my mother. Passed a trooper at 110 on 95. Yup, he got me. Did not believe that I had a 6 banger until I opened the hood. Never will know how it didn't make the gate as a warning to Marines to slow down.
