View Full Version : The Marines in Halo

Is it just me or does Halo (Xbox) make the Marines look like completely incompetent pieces of ****? I mean, they fight alongside you, but only the Spartans (like Master Chief... who's Navy, not Marines) seem to do any good in the fight against the Covenant...

I don't think Microsoft or Bungie Studios meant to disrespect Marines. If they had, many, many Marines would be breaking many, many things in their office right now.

I've heard, though, that the AI in Halo 3 is much better, and that the fierceness of the Marines gets better as you increase the difficulty. So instead of them brazenly throwing themselves at Brutes, you see them take more guerilla-style tactics. And the four-player co-op helps, too...

Anyone working with the sci-fi universe knows how easy it is to stamp the word "marine" on anything and have that serve as the archetypal foot soldier of the human race. I mean, really, it IS the future too, I would be soiling my pants right now if I thought in the future our infantry would all just clump up like a disorganized Civil War charge, fighting off bugs while falling back at the first call of "retreat" from a random soldier like it was Starship Troopers.
Space Marines in Warhammer 40K on the other hand are pretty good...for a fantasy roleplaying game...
I would like to think that future sci-fi space marines do not equate to United States Marines. Sergeant (Sergeant Major now) Johnson was pretty cool though.

LOL! Is it just me or do you feel like you entered the Twilight Zone too? I thought it was strange reading what ONE of them had to say......................now there's 2 more? OMG! :scared:

Well the creators of the game can't have the AI playing for you. If they made the Marines remotely realistic in their skill level there would be no game.
The Space Marines in Aliens were pretty badass.

If people spent more time PTing and less time playing video games maybe there'd be fewer people here asking how to get their IST scores better a week before they ship or less people trying to lose weight.

My xbox broke in 9th grade and I haven't touched a video game since. In fact, just got back from a PFT run.
But I still loved Halo, the sequal ruined it for me though.

It's a unrealistic, futuristic video game. I wouldn't get too upset about it there.

How much combat have you seen? How many Marines or Soldiers in combat have health that regenerates when they aren't being shot at? How many weapons run on batteries rather than ammo? And, while we're there- why can't the weapons that use bullets not overheat? And when did we invent faster than light travel? (Amazing what you can learn on wikipedia!)
Honestly, if you all want to talk about video games, I have no problem with it. But, saying that any video game isn't unrealistic is asinine. Telling a Marine that it is is foolish. And honestly, thinking this is the proper forum for this discussion is a little inmature. But, I hope you all enjoy the video game.
If you all have to play video games, you should at least try some of the games based on the game created for Marines that are going to the sand box. It may not be the best game out there as far as game engines and game play go, but give First to Fight a try.
Covey_Rider
09-04-07, 03:18 AM
First to Fight is a good game. As is rainbow six las vegas. I know alot of us play vegas and actually use MOUT techniques when playing the game...digging corners, stacking on walls etc.

Oh for God's sake, this is a ****ing videogame! Therefore it follows the physics of a videogame. Stop looking so deep into it. As someone before me stated, concentrate more on preparing for Boot Camp than on videogames.

Dear Board:
My PT scores are a little low and I need to boost them up. I currently can only look up at the pull up bars twice. I want to increase my strength so that I may actually jump in their general direction.
In addition I am a little stiff. I realize that another recruit may assist me by sitting on my feet, may he also help lower me to the ground?>??....It is a LONG way down on my own and I am not as flexible as I was when the original Halo came out...
My run time is outstanding. I can run four Marines across the map in about 3 seconds. It is my 3000mb harddrive and Computer graphic images (CGI) that make it so realisitc...so no help needed there..... oh wait....you mean a real run? I haven't tried that yet:sick: I may be sick!
Oh yes, another obstacle to my fitness level is that my thumbs constantly ache and my hands cramp spastically all the time! Any advice?? Maybe more tuna?
~No disrespect to the poster or anyone else....just having a "spot" of fun....~
Oh and Hollywood messes up the Marine thing on a daily basis, so the computer game should be a given. If I see the "mess stick" commercial for Tide one more time with the white chevrons on Khaki SLEEVES I will hurt myself. I just tell myself it is a police incarceration camp.....and that brings me to my happy place

Sorry I should have emphasized the sarcasm. I laugh at people who play video games and then talk like they know something about combat (ever been lectured on sniper strategy from someone who plays PS2...)
It was meant to be a joke, I don't think any video games in any way emulate combat. Halo is of course unrealistic. If any video game was similar in any way to real war it would probably be Rainbow 6 or something where you get shot once you die. Either way it is still just a video game.

Your attitude alone is why I have a problem with people that spend their entire pasty white lives sitting in front of a TV playing a game. You think that because you can press a button that it means you have actually accomplished something.
You know, millions of people play video games on a daily basis. Most of them play for a while, and then go on to something else. Only the truly confused would take the time to defend their game playing on a forum that has nothing to do with video games. You said you're going back to PT--- but for some reason I doubt it. I'll bet you're sitting on your butt thinking you're GI Joe himself right about now.

Whatever happened to the time when we were younger when going to play sports meant we were going to sweat, work hard, and probably get hurt but it didnt matter because it meant some good fun with buddies. I know that I might be in the minority here yet playin madden is not a good time, as a matter of fact its a waste of time. Id much rather meet some attractive females to hang out with or play a game of rugby with my buddies. But what do I know, im just a poolee hopeful.

I won't lie, I used to be a video game addict. And it absolutly is a means for people to pretend they are something they are not. Look at the kids who play SOCOM with their headsets and stuff. It is fun, absolutly, but largely because it is an escape. Just like getting lost in a story or movie, but you have a say in what happens.
Some video games relating to strategy building could be benneficial. After all, Enders Game is on the commandants reading list, and it is about video games and use of strategy. Interesting read, I would recommend it.

SOCOM is a fun game. The guys in my old fireteam used to play online when it first came out. I actually have a copy of First to Fight, spent about an hour playing it probably. Games can be fun, but it is more fun to get out and do things. You can have the same escape at the gym, on the basketball court, or going for a run. I shoot two or three times a week and it is an escape and workout when I train. I spend a couple hours a day on the bike. I go to work, and I am working on a graduate degree. Life is much better when you're doing something productive. I'm not saying not to spend time playing the video games if you enjoy it- but it shouldn't be such a focus that you come here and get defensive about people thinking it is a waste of time.

Wow...I enjoy playing games once in a while. Hate shooting games though...wait, what was I doing. That's right, I was resting after that
5+ (I don't the actual distance) mile hike from my girlfriends house. Even though I could have gotten a ride we decided it would be more fun to walk and work off some un-fitness. We might've run but my buddy is too out of shape to run much.

I ran IST last night...I am dissapointed and satisfied at the same time. I made it, but in 13:03. I think once I got 12:30. But it sucks, running in South East Kansas.
I really like computer games (I don't own any consoles). And anyone can continue to enjoy them so long as they manage their time responsibly. That's pretty much been the most productive factor in my getting into shape. I work out every day, I've been mostly happy with the way I've been losing fat and gaining muscle, and I still play and socialize on the computer. The difference is, instead of coming home from school or extra-curicular activities and wasting away nonstop until dinner and then doing homework and wasting away some more or reading, I use much more of that time to work out and put more effort into my studies. Computer games used to control my life. Now they're just something I enjoy after a long day.

If the game doom portrayed Marines as poorly as the movie, than I'm not interested. The commanding officer's nick name was "sarge" and they all refered to eachother as soldier. That and they were most certainly not squared away.

Wow, this thread really ballooned in my absence. Not to be disrespectful, but I was just pointing out that the Marines in Halo are nothing like the real thing. I'm not a videogame addict! In fact, I play football, paintball, I hike and camp, box, I'm a huge UFC fan, and I use my summers to catch up on videogames, so I usually gain 10-30 lbs in that 3 month time frame. I'm a student first and foremost, a Marine hopeful second, and a person who uses videogames to unwind past 10 o'clock third. Mud ball is great. And have you ever taken a paintball in your groin? My ***** were literally blue for a week. I may have no real combat experience, but I do know pain.

The Marines in halo are there just to help you out. The Marines in the Dawn Or War games just kick a**! I love the Chaos Marines in that game. But those are just game AI.
