View Full Version : Some questiong about health
Hi,
Ive always been interesting in military weapons and tactics. I finally relized a Marine is what i really want to be, I am determine and have started training already, to make sure i am in top shape.
Earlier today i feinted, and went to the doctor and was told I have a heart murmur, they arent sure if its a bad one or just something that I will grow out of or wont affect me.
I was wondering, is their any hope left for me to still join the corps? It would kill me to see a dream go down the toilet like this.
Thank you for your answers. Jamal.

I would think that ANYTHING having to do with the ticker would be disqualifying.

There is a thread on this page where someone stated having a heart murmur that the doctors at MEPs could not hear so they didn't get a DQ or a waiver for it.

I have heard stories on various boards and one personal contact of people eventually obtaining a waiver once it was proven they no longer had a heart condition, but it will likely take a lot of time and work, if it is possible at all. Bottom line I don't think you are guaranteed you can never be a Marine, but it's not going to be easy.
I'm dealing with MEPS on a much smaller issue right now, and believe me, they don't take ANYTHING lightly.

There was a guy that I went to boot camp with that had a heart murmur. So I'm sure there's a way.

This is VERY true. You don't know how many Navy and Army guys I was sitting with waiting for my recruiter to come pick me up who got DQd for earwax! Of all the reasons too!

i bet he'se a terrorist attempting to create a weapon, that if put in the water system would develop heart murmurs on teenagers all over the United States, then there would be no more U.S Marines kicking there A**!!!

Lol. It's funny you mention the DQ for earwax thing....that f'n happened to me! I was SO ****ed that I wasted a weekend at MEPS, just to come back next weekend to freakin' get my ears cleaned -- to come back NEXT weekend to get freakin' enlisted.
I'm still watchin' you, though *shifty eyes*.

I was so ****ed because they left by the time my recruiter and I got back. I would have been able to get it all done in one weekend if they didn't call it early.
Best part of that day though was a Doctor asking me about the tattoo of a gun shooting into a heart on my chest...
"Do you want to do that to yourself?"
"Excuse me sir?
"Do you want to shoot yourself in the heart....or hurt yourself?"
"Um, no...sir"
"Do you want to do that to other people? Do you think its ok to shoot other people in the heart?"
"Well...no sir"
"Ok. Well we can't finish your processing because you have too much earwax in your ear canals, so we can't see to make sure your ear drums are ok...but you passed the hearing test well above average."
"So I have to go home and clean them then sir?
"Yup, go to your liasons office and have them call your recruiter."
The bold part really caught me off guard because normally if someone on the street would have asked me that I would have responded with something like
"I wouldn't have joined the Marine Corps if I didn't feel that some people, like those who object to freedom, deserve to be shot in the heart."
And I hope you are refering to Jamal about still watching as a terrorist, haha.

Lol fo sho.
BTW Jamal, that was a joke, I hope you took it as such.
Anyways, yes, let it be known once and for all. MEPS is GAY.
Especially if your doctor has shaky hands. Just makes the whole situation that much worse. I'll leave that up to imagination and interpretation.

HAHAHAHA.
Wow.
Well Jamal, at least you can say you got a good welcome to the forums with the responses your post got.
I recently went to meps and there was a few questions about ever having problems with a murmur. I think it may be waiverable just make sure you tell your recruiter & they will want all your medical docs on it so try and keep those. Goodluck

I'm very sorry to inform you, but you joining the Marine Corps with a heart murmur is not just dangerous to yourself, but it's dangerous to other Marines!
Heart murmurs are ALL, "bad ones." You don't grow out of a heart murmur. Heart murmurs will affect you subjectively and situationally.
If something, God forbid, were to happen to your heart in the middle of combat, due to an unreported heart murmur that allowed you to get in -- and it ended up endangering other Marines lives as a result..can you imagine the weight of that terrible burden you'd feel?

Tell your recruiter first. I don't know anything about murmurs. Are you physically active? If you have proof, tell your recruiter. I had too! Helps show that your heart can handle stress.

I don't know how up to date or accurate this is but hopefully it helps you out. PM me if you want to talk more.
Well i was active, ran 1 mile every morning, excersized daily, etc. Doctor told me to take it easy until I get my echo cardio graph test, He said it may be a one time thing and nothing may be wrong, just something like a infection somewhere, I was told there are tons of reason it can happen

There are some murmurs like that, true. And in your case, I hope that's what it turns out to be. Sometimes the heart can just be temporarilly off rhythm.

My brother experienced the same thing while in training. He went in for a shoulder check up but somehow he got his heart checked and they said he had a heart murmur. A couple days later for a follow up his heart was normal.

My friend was being checked before anasthesia for mouth surgeory and his heart rythm came out funny. He had a followup check a week later and all was good to go. DEPped in now.
