Use it or lose it. Garrisoned Marines have only one month left to burn excess leave before the start of the new fiscal year on Oct. 1, when vacation time resets to a maximum of 60 days for everyone who hasn’t deployed, according to an Aug. 30 Corps-wide message.

Active-duty Marines and mobilized reservists “who have not been authorized annual leave as a consequence of operations” in Iraq and Afghanistan “may be authorized to accumulate annual leave in excess of 60 days” but not more than 120 days on the books, states MarAdmin 516/07.

Marines are qualified to bring extra leave forward into the new fiscal year only if they’ve spent at least 120 days in an area that entitles them to hostile-fire and imminent-danger pay or 60 days aboard a ship away from its home port, the message states.

If they qualify, the message authorizes Marines to keep their excess leave on the books through Sept. 30, 2010.

Marines who were prevented from taking leave by operational commitments, but who do not meet the deployment criteria, can still qualify to keep up to 30 extra days on the books through Sept. 30, 2008, according to the message.

Commanders at the squadron or battalion level have the authority to authorize excess leave accrual for their entitled Marines.
