Golf gifts: Local residents come through for Marines

Just a few short weeks ago, the Marines were looking for a few good golf clubs. Now they're looking for room to store them all.

When the call went out from a company first sergeant in San Diego looking for people to donate golf clubs to help in the rehabilitation of wounded Marines home from Iraq, Lufkin Police officer Rodney Squyres brought the message back to East Texas. And in their typical generous fashion, East Texans have come together to donate to the worthy cause — and the result has been nothing short of spectacular.

"It's been overwhelming," Squyres said of the response. "So far we've collected more than 25 golf bags and more than 350 clubs."

So steady has been the flow of donations, Squyres and his assistants — wife Reba and her staff in the Angelina County District Clerk's office — have recruited even more help in the storage and shipping process. The Pineywoods Chapter of the Marine Corps League has offered to help with the shipping of the clubs; A-1 Self Storage on Feagin Street in Lufkin has volunteered to act as the collection point for future donations.

"I think it's really great how people in this area have responded to this," Squyres said. "The staff at the District Clerk's office went way beyond the call in helping organize this and keep things together.

"I think it says a lot about the people in our area, that they're willing to help others in just about any way possible."

Those looking to donate golf clubs can contact A-1 Self Storage at 632-4591.
