The knock at the door

In 2005, a reporter and photographer for the Rocky Mountain News followed a Marine casualty assistant officer and his comrades from Buckley Air Force Base for most of the year as they notified families in the area that their Marine had been killed. The reporter and photographer captured Maj. Steve Beck as he and his Marines kept constant watch over the caskets of the men they never knew and comforted the families of the fallen.

A 24-page special section called "Final Salute" was printed on Veterans Day 2005. Jim Sheeler, the reporter, and Todd Heisler, the photographer, won the 2006 Pulitzer Prize for their work. Look at the section and you'll see why. It's incredibly moving, respectful and sensitive. An expanded version of that story is scheduled for publication by The Penguin Press in 2008.

One of the widows featured in the "Final Salute" appeared with the writer on a Memorial Day television program. She was pregnant when her husband was killed in Iraq and talks about how she's dealing with raising her child without his father. It's worth watching.
