Hernandez family finally receives letter from Marines

A Bakersfield family finally gets a response today from the U.S. Marine Corps about the death of their son who was found in his barracks at 29 Palms.

The mysterious death of Lance Corporal Ramiro Hernandez has left his parents searching for answers they say the military has not yet provided.

The Hernandez family today received a hand delivered letter from Camp Pendleton which is short on details.

That letter says an investigation is underway and it is expected to be done by next month.

It was last week when 24 year old Lance Corporal Ramiro Hernandez of Bakersfield was found in his barracks at one in the morning.

The Marines say Hernandez was 'unresponsive'. Up till now, that's pretty much all the family had been told, despite numerous rumors.

Today's letter says an investigation was started on August 22nd and it is expected to be completed by September 22nd.

The Hernandez family is at a loss to understand how their son could have died in his barracks among his fellow Marines.

"I don't know!" said Rachel Hernandez, Ramiro's Mother, "Now, if he were to go to Iraq, that would've been a different story. But he's in 29 Palms! He's there with his brothers, the ones that are supposed to be protecting him and taking care of him. And for something like that, I don't know."

We've tried numerous times to contact the Marines at Camp Pendleton for a comment on this story and to get more information on the investigation.

Our calls have not been returned.
