SAN DIEGO -- A 21-year-old Camp Pendleton-based Marine was found dead this week at the Marine Corps Logistics Base in Barstow, military officials said Wednesday.

Pfc. John P. Harris of Mount Solon, Va., was found deceased at the base in San Bernardino County on Monday, according to USMC officials.

Investigators from the base and the Naval Criminal Investigative Service were looking into the cause of death,
authorities said.

Harris, who joined Marines last September, was an amphibious vehicle technician assigned to Camp Pendleton's 3rd Amphibious Assault Battalion, 1st Marine Division.

OCEANSIDE, Calif. — The Marine Corps is investigating the death of a junior Marine whose body was found early Monday in Barstow, Calif., officials said Wednesday.

The Marine was identified as Pfc. John P. Harris, a 21-year-old from Mount Solon, Va., Camp Pendleton officials said in a release. No other details were provided.

The Naval Criminal Investigative Service and officials at Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow are investigating the cause of death.

Harris, an amphibious vehicle technician who was assigned to the 3rd Assault Amphibian Battalion at Pendleton, joined the Corps nearly a year ago.

His father, Thomas Harris, told The Associated Press that his son died from an accidental fall. “It was just a tragic accident, that’s all we know,” he told the AP, adding, “He was a very special kid. He is going to be deeply missed.”
